Paul Kalkbrenner - Essential Mix - 30-07-2011

As of 2010, Paul Kalkbrenner has tallied up more than 15 years of experience as a producer and live act. The early 90s after the Berlin Wall fell were formative years for Paul, and after spending many long and sleepless nights on the dancefloors of E-Werk, Planet and Whale, the dream was born to make music himself. A job as TV editor got him through the mid-90s and financed his first music gear. By this point Paul had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people's records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks as Paul Kalkbrenner were released in 1999 on Berlin-based BPitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city's east. A series of further singles and two full-lengths (Superimpose and Time) followed, plus continuous live performances.

The Life Festival Ireland

Best of 2010

This Irish techno & trance festival did not make our Top 10 list but it is necessary to commend them on a great job last Summer in Belvedere House and the lakeside surrounding grounds. They were blessed with the weather and awesome Djs Infected Mushroom, Ricardo Villalobos, LTJ Bukem (feat. MC Conrad), Chris Liebing, Ben Sims + Surgeon aka Frequency7, Mad Professor, Japanese Popstars, Astral Projection.Next dates are May 27-29 2011

No.10 Zurich Street Parade (Switzerland)

Saturday 13th August 2011 Ok so someone had to be ranked 10th but this is no reflection on this excellent European street-party. This festival began in 1991 as a protest of a thousand people or so and now brings near a million people to the streets of Zurich in Switzerland.

The best part of the parade is the backdrop of Zurich's marina as you cross the bridge with lots of beautiful boats which make this parade an amazing experience.

Maybe this could feature higher on our list of European techno festivals if it was a little longer; the Zurich street parade begins at 1pm and finishes at 10pm, sadly it is only a one day affair. It is also very commercial but that guarantees that the event goes ahead and this is the type of organisation that the Loveparade could learn from.

No.9 Sonar

Thursday 16th - Saturday 18th June 2011 Lots of awesome Djs have rocked out in Spain at Barcelona's Sonar festival. The only way we could deduct points from Sonar was due to the diversity of the festival, its not only music but also theatre and street performance. Hence its not technically an electro street fest in the typical sense.

It should be noted however the diversity of music and performance are what helped Sonar get recognised on this list.

No.8 Monegros

TBC (Probably 16th or 23rd July 2011)

This Spanish festival began as a reunion of the patrons of Club Florida 135 and was first held in 1994. Today Monegros is one of the best events of the European electronic music calendar with around 40,000 people turning up to party hard from local towns like Lleida, Zaragoza and Huesca.

This desert festival focuses on providing electronic music artists who rock your body but it looses points on our top ten due to the hip-hop artists and international rap which play there (we acknowledge this is also great & necessary music but this is an electro-dance festival list :)

No.7 Norberg Festival

TBC (Probably 29th-31st July 2011)

Located in an old mine in the Municipality in Västmanland County in Sweden, the 2 hour journey from Stockholm is justified as you bounce around a disused Iron mine which still contains rusty machinery, gantries and cranes. Founded in 1998 by Michael "ØSTERZ" Christiansen this festival is still an intimate gathering.

2009 witnessed sets from Swedish electronica legend Andreas Tilliander and the British aficionado B12 as well as Syntjuntan who organised a workshop where you can sew (yep- sew) your own synthesiser.

No.6 Love Family Park

Sunday 3rd July 2011

Celebrate at Germany's Hanau’s Mainwiesen where the Love Family Park kicks off from 9am-10pm. Not convinced ? ok the word 'family' in a festival can be a turn-off but check out some previous world class Djs who performed there: Sven Vath, Underworld, Ricardo Villalobos, Deichkind, Turntablerocker, Loco Dice & Luciano.

No.5 Lake Parade Geneva

TBC (Probably 9th July 2011) It's back to Switzerland for Geneva's Lake parade which begins around 2pm; a small house & techno festival and the best part of which is the official after-party; Lake Sensation which takes place Lake Geneva. Lake Sensation finishes around 3am. This electro-dance festival features around 150 Djs but only about 20 lovemobiles (the bloco's where Djs perform).

This street-fest features a lot of Swiss and French Djs. Be sure to check out the Samba/ Brazilian lovemobile for awesome drum beats and latino house.

No.4 Fusion Festival

Thursday 30th June - Sunday 3rd July 2011Also known as
Фузион takes place in late June each year since 1997 on the former military airfield in Lärz (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) Germany and lasts four days. In 2009 60,000 electronica lovers attended.

The concept of Fusion is 'holiday communism' which loosely translated means mutual tolerance and no advertising. The music menu includes all genres of electronic dance like techno, house, drum'n'bass, breakbeat, dub, trance & Goa as well as some randomness like Finnish tango and other live music.

No.3 Paris Techno Parade

TBC (Probably Saturday September 24th 2011) In France for one day every year Paris is not the city of love. This September for one day only Paris will be the city of lust, funk, dance and all things electro. Join half a million people dancing through the streets of gay Paris following a line-up of world class techno Djs like David Guetta, Mark Knight, Dj Ufuk & Django.

No.2 Loveland in Holland

Saturday 13th August 2011 Loveland is an intimate gathering located in Sloterpark, a twenty minute tram ride from Amsterdam in Holland. The organization is excellent and the surrounding forrest and outdoor pool make for great fun and games. Expect kickin' Djs, previous performers include Erik Prydz, Tiefschwartz, Renato Cohen, Michael Mayer, Carl Graig, Stacey Pullen, Aril Brikha, Anthony Roter, Sebastien Leger, Sasha, Eimusic, Rex the dog, Marnix, Secret Cinema, Michel de Hey, Eric Morillio.

No.1 Nature One Friday 5th

Sunday 7th August 2011 With names like Paul van Dyk, Paul Kalkbrenner, Carl Cox, Felix Kröcher & Deadmau5 is easy to see why this techno festival is number 1 on our list. Also it's Europes largest open-air electro-music festival with numbers of 62,000 + in 2009. Located at the US Missile base called "Pydna" it's easily accessible from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport which is only 20 minutes away from Pydna.

Ok so there's the best line-up in the world and the most like-minded electro-dancers possible are surrounding you, why else should you go to Nature-One ? It has 5 main areas each with a different theme; you can listen to live techno mixing at Century Circus or check out the Classic Terminal where you can hear the crackle of old vinyl.

Other areas include Running Order, The Open Air Floor & House of House. Still not convinced ? Well it takes place over 2 days (not the classic 'in and out' 1 day operation) and 2 day tickets have never been more than €70, now that's value.

Festivals

Bestival

The official full-stop on the British summer, it's hard to believe that Rob Da Bank's Bestival is only six years old such is its standing.

At this 2010’s ‘Year of The Fantastic’ themed event, the live line-up is simply staggering with The Japanese Popstars, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Echo & The Bunnymen and Ulrich Schnauss just a snapshot of the diversity on offer, while Mylo, Joy Orbison, Todd Edwards, Erol Alkan and Aeroplane are a tiny slice of the DJ bill. The Prodigy will be rocking their only UK festival date of 2010 and their last gig in yonks and Clash collaborator Don Letts will be dropping a DJ set a day. And that’s without mentioning the innumerable extras like the inflatable church, healing fields, the communal fancy dress mayhem or Buttercupcakes afternoon tea hut. Insane on every level and simply massive amounts of fun — come rain or shine.

SW4

A social institution for thousands of London clubbers, SW4 is now a two-day event with Sunday’s event replacing Get Loaded festival on the common.

Upholding the SW4 traditions of old Saturday is strictly big room beats with Armin Van Buuren headlining the epic outdoor stage, while John Digweed’s Bedrock arena offering techno-leaning talents like Joris Voorn, Mutant Clan and Josh Wink, The Gallery’s tent presenting a high-energy trance orgy and Mark Knight’s Toolroom arena coming correct with electronic house dons like Dave Spoon, Dirty South and Funkagenda. Sunday takes things more eclectic with Fatboy Slim dropping his only London show of 2010, a Boys Noize Records arena bringing Boyz Noize, Switch, Erol Alkan, A Trak and more, while Together’s tent covers the full gamut of bass music with Andy C, Skream & Benga, Jack Beats, Ms Dynamite, Mixhell, SBTRKT and more. Creamfields

Not only is this year’s Creamfields line-up ticking off every genre imaginable, it’s generally inviting the biggest brands in the business to showcase them...

...Sven Väth’s Cocoon, Paul Van Dyk’s Vandit, Northern dubstep/d&b giants Ape, Eric Prydz’s Pryda & Friends, hard dance boshers Good Greef, Annie Mac, funky housers Hed Kandi and Chibuku all host arenas across the two days. Cream favourites the Swedish House Mafia are also hosting their own arena for the third year on the spin, global DJ phenomena David Guetta and Tiësto headline the main stage on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while electronica pioneers Leftfield — or at least one half of them — shoot out of retirement for a nostalgic live set.

Big Chill Festival

Growing from a word-of-mouth celebration of mind-bending downtempo music for 700 like-minded experience seekers to the globally recognised 35,000 plus festival it is today, the Big Chill’s 16-year legacy makes it something of a national treasure on the Brit festival circuit.

Arguably fresher than ever in its musical make-up, the open-minded gathering still invites plenty of horizontally inclined, bifta beckoning beats but now packs in plenty of late-night rave naughtiness thanks to names like Layo & Bushwacka, wonky Bristolian beatsmith Joker, Toddla T & MC Serocee, genre-crossing coverstar Redlight, a selection of top dollar drum & bass talent from Hospital Records and techno futurists Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones.
WHEN? Thursday 5th - Sunday 8th August

…the 10th Global Gathering has it all and then some with 16 Funktion One filled arenas, over 150 strictly first class DJs and live acts, flashing fairground nonsense and 50,000 plus clubbers flooding into Long Marston’s disused airfield from across the lands to go absolutely batshit bonkers. No major surprises — if it ain’t broke don’t fix it is definitely the vibe for the decade anniversary event — although there are new tents in the form of Toolroom Vs Size’s electro-house arena and the debut of FWD Vs Rinse FM’s dubstep/funky/grime showcase.

Glade

The raver’s choice, Glade has become the essential annual mash-down for the discerning festival-loving electronic music connoisseur — especially boosted by its move to the Matterley Bowel last year, after years of dire sound level clampdowns in its previous site.

With its thai dyed hippy roots as a woodland clearing stage at Glastonbury, Glade remains decidedly less commercial than dance music festie forefathers like Creamfields, with a line-up that shuns the cheesy superstar DJs for headliners like Tricky, Simian Mobile Disco and Orbital. Most of all, though, Glade is all about debauched, devil-may-care fun. Whether it is the gut-wrenching dubstep and drum & bass bangers that will blast out of the Boomtown tent, the classic techno or future funky of Bloc’s Vapor stage or the wibbly, wobbly high-energy psy-trance basslines that worm out of the outdoor Origin stage, you can be sure that they’ll be met with messy, face-melting grins of appreciation from the notoriously hardcore Glade crowd.
WHEN? Thursday 15th - Sunday 18th July ?
WHERE? The Matterley Bowel, near Winchester, Hampshire
HIGHLIGHTS? Orbital, Tricky, Simian Mobile Disco, Jeff Mills, Green Velvet, Seth Troxler, Magnetic Man, Green Velvet, Holy Ghost!, and Skream & Benga
HOW MUCH? £142.50 weekend ticket

Glastonbury

One festival that should need no introduction, the sprawling microcosm of madness that is Glastonbury remains a festival experience like no other in the country.
With well over 30 stages, absolutely massive main-stage headliners and endless pockets of eccentric weirdness, Glastonbury has also got one of the best dance line-ups around these days. A festival in itself, Glastonbury’s ever-expanding Dance Village now features over six separate stages covering everything from underground house to darkside drum & bass, disco grooves to dubstep deepness, and much more beyond, with perennial faves saddling up alongside upstart innovators. Main-stage headliners are still yet to unannounced, but with everyone from The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers to Fatboy Slim and Leftfield rocking things up on either the Pyramid stage or the Other stage in the past, expect some heavyweight electronica to join the assorted ensemble of  indie icons, rock gods, pop greats and cult figures.
WHEN? Wednesday 23rd - Sunday 27th June
WHERE? Worthy Farm, Glastonbury, Somerset
HOW MUCH? £sold out
HEADLINERS? Joy Orbison, Dam Funk, Jamie Jones, Kode 9, Roska, Chase & Status, Simian Mobile Disco, Delphic, Above & Beyond, Kelis, Rusko and Chromeo.
Kazantip

This is not a festival. This is a project and my gosh it's immense.
Hold onto your hats and prepare to join the Kazantip Republic, because this baby has it's own philosophy, rules and not many limits. It lasts for about 3 weeks and the artist line up is staggeringly good. The tiny KaZantip Republic exists in a parallel reality, and everything here goes the way the PreZident came up with: "summer all year round" and "life with no pants". The sun is shining, the sea is swinging, the music is singing on every side and the wind is always blowing strong enough for flying with a kite. You can do nothing, if you want nothing to do with doing something or you can do everything you want the way you want it.This small land of the rising fun is peopled not with damn boring grown-ups, but with cheerful bronzed lazybones, not really eager to say goodbye to their childhood, as well as their PreZident himself. The nonexistence of the KaZantip Republic for the rest of the exhausted world makes its significant independency. It lives by its own constitution; it has its own great nation, small president and lolable government, responsible for the most important things in the state, such as sound and light, love and good humour, virtual deeds and illusions. There is also a visa regime, a bureau of customs, national traditions and the official religion - belief in the reality of miracles. It's on the beach, not far from a disused nuclear power station. It's nuts. It's worth a look if you think you're robust enough.
